From Instructional Design to Capability Building: Using AI to Close the Gap Between Learning and Performance

Most learning programs still begin with content. A capability approach begins with a different question: what must people be able to do, in a real situation, to perform well?

This session will show how instructional designers can use AI to put that idea into practice. Using a real-world example, we will move from a business challenge to a clear capability, define what good performance looks like, identify the knowledge, judgment and practice required, and
design an experience that builds evidence of performance.

The session will also show where AI can help, including analyzing work, generating realistic practice scenarios, adapting feedback and accelerating design. The goal is not to automate instructional design. It is to help instructional designers move beyond producing content and
take a stronger role in shaping workforce performance.
