Digital Education Strategies (DES) Unit at the G. DES is known for developing creative learning applications and sharing expertise in technology-enhanced education. With over 23,000 annual distance enrolments, the unit supports the offering of 30 percent of the Chang School’s programming through distance education, including 15 fully online certificate programs and 22 blended certificate programs. Additionally, over 40 new online courses are developed every year by The Chang School, adding to its current catalogue of over 400+ online and hybrid courses.

The Opportunity:

Digital Education Strategies is looking for a passionate and knowledgeable Instructional Designer to be part of an award-winning, highly motivated team. This position is responsible for collaborating with faculty and subject matter experts (SMEs) in the development of online courses and learning materials that are engaging and follow a multimodal approach i.e. incorporate written text, audio, video and multimedia tools. The Instructional Designer will consult, train, and serve as a resource person to the Academic Coordinators, Subject Matter Experts and faculty members in the design, development, and revision of courses, learning activities, assessments and overall online curriculum support.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide ongoing support to SMEs with development and redevelopment of courses adhering to instructional design methodologies and adult learning principles
  • Collaborate closely with faculty and SMEs to develop an understanding of the expected learning outcomes for the courses or offerings to be developed and facilitate the process of designing engaging learning experience for online learners
  • Act as the lead-hand on assigned course development projects; work collaboratively with the team responsible for the production of new courses, redevelopment of existing courses and revisions accordingly
  • Conduct research and facilitate workshops and presentations on topics related to effective learning and teaching practices in the online learning environment, course development processes etc.
  • Coordinate all aspects of course developments assigned

Qualifications:
  • Successful completion of a Master’s Degree in Instructional Design or a relevant Master’s Degree with specialization in Educational Technology and eLearning. A minimum of three years of relevant work experience in instructional design and digital media production is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of storyboarding, various multimedia authoring tools, content management and the application of multimedia in both a teaching and learning environment, particularly for adult learners.
  • Excellent knowledge and familiarity with the principles of active learning and relevant uses of technology in teaching and learning..
  • Must be familiar with Learning Management System (LMS) and Content Management System (CMS) technologies and with using and evaluating online multimedia application for learning and teaching.
  • Demonstrated experience with current learning and teaching technologies and effective pedagogical approaches particularly as these relate to adult learners.
  • An ability to work independently and also as an effective team member; excellent time management skills and flexibility are required to allow efficient management of tight start-up project schedules.

Nature of Work

The job of pedagogical counsellor involves more specifically functions of advising, leading, providing information, as well as development, support and feedback to the teaching staff, the executive staff responsible for teaching services and other stakeholders at the College, in connection with pedagogy, and particularly programs of study, learning and teaching strategies, nature and methods of evaluation, as well as research and innovation.

Specifically, the incumbent acts as a resource to the academic sector in the design, organization and delivery of pedagogical development services. The pedagogical counsellor will also facilitate the transfer of evidence based-practices and high-impact practices into the classroom.

Responsibilities

  • In the context of institutional directions and using appropriate tools and methodologies (e.g., consultations, workshops, presentations, documentation, technology, etc.) provide training and support to faculty in:
    • Choosing and implementing effective and appropriate teaching and assessment methods
    • Understanding and implementing competency-based education and the program approach
    • Analyzing learning activities, assignments and assessment activities
    • Teaching to different learning styles and abilities
    • Developing and modifying course planning and design tools
    • Motivating and managing students during academic activities
  • Recommend appropriate learning theories and results of educational research to meet specific teaching needs and guide instructional design
  • Participate in the efforts to disseminate evidence-based practices and high-impact practices into the classroom by developing resources for faculty, holding workshops, and identifying and recommending other instructional interventions

Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in an appropriate field of specialization, particularly education, educational technology, instructional design or related field.

Conditions

The Position
Reporting to the Director of Operations and working with other employees, the Education Program Manager will be responsible for all details surrounding the development and operation of Passive House Canada’s education program. More specifically, you will oversee a national professional education program targeted to adult learners in the high-performance construction industry, focusing on architects, designers, technologists, engineers, builders, developers, government officials and others.

Knowledge of the Passive House Standard is not required but an interest in sustainable building and a passion for a greener future is necessary!

Ideally, this position will be based in Victoria, but we will consider candidates who would work Vancouver. Only one person will be hired.

Curriculum design and planning:

  • Use the ADDIE model (or equivalent) to develop new program offerings and improve existing ones
  • Consult with Education Committee to improve the education program content
  • Liaise with industry and government contacts to maintain awareness of key topics in the highperformance building industry
  • Identify and oversee suitable subject matter experts to participate in the ongoing review and updating of the education program content
  • In collaboration with the volunteer Education Committee, continually assess learning needs and opportunities for members
  • Lead the evaluation and development of online learning options
Education program management:
  • Develop the education program calendar on a quarterly or semi-annual basis (which courses are offered when, where, instructed by whom, etc.)
  • Use the CRM application to manage and participants courses on the website
  • Liaise with learners to promote the program and answer enquiries
  • Liaise with international organizations to ensure the program adheres to specific learning standards, outcomes and certifications
  • Work with the Manager of Communications and Member Services to ensure the education program is marketed and promoted adequately
  • Network with industry professionals and government representatives to identify potential new partnerships as well as qualified subject matter experts
  • Liaise with Canadian professional associations for collaboration and accreditation
  • Manage and foster relationships with related international organizations Respond to inquiries related to the education program as needed
Outreach:
  • Reach out to architectural and engineering firms, as well as municipalities to generate awareness of our private, customized course offerings
  • Respond to requests for private course offerings by preparing proposals that outline learning outcomes, fees and timelines
  • Reach out to academic institutions to explore opportunities for partnerships that will facilitate wider spread adoption of high performance building principles
  • Research grants and other funding opportunities to offer existing or new courses that will help drive market transformation of the building industry
Job requirements and qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in educational or instructional technology, instructional design, curricula and instruction, adult education or related field (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in instructional design, educational technology, training, pedagogy, or curriculum development with a particular emphasis on developing instructor-led training programs
  • Experience applying the ADDIE model or equivalent in instructional design
  • Significant experience using e-learning technologies, learning and knowledge management systems, networks, communities of practices
  • A background in architecture and/or construction experience would be an asset
  • Must be comfortable in a fast pace, deadline-driven environment and able to manage multiple priorities well
  • Excellent project management skills

Limited Term Instructional Designer

The Instructional Designer reports to the Director, Curriculum Development and Delivery. The Instructional Designer will assume responsibility for the development of Open Learning courses in a variety of subject areas and delivery modes. The Instructional Designer is responsible for the academic integrity of courses and leads course development teams composed of subject matter experts.

The instructional design of Open Learning courses includes liaising with the particular academic areas, hiring subject matter experts, and preparing contracts/agreements. We’re seeking a dynamic, client focused, instructional designer to join our team on a project to project contract basis, creating in-person and online leadership learning experiences for people who lead others in organizations.

The first project (already underway):

  • Start immediately through to June/July
  • Work with us, our client and another Instructional Designer on our team, to create up to 13 in-person learning events for a cohort-based Management Development Program, featuring the client’s material, and to be facilitated by the client.
Second project:
  • Start summer.
  • Work with us to create 1-3 short courses to be offered online asynchronously and/or mostly at one’s own pace with one or two check-in meetings along the way.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in multiple internal learning projects and client learning projects, varying in size and complexity.
  • Consult with clients, subject matter experts and internal staff to understand learning needs and define success measures.
  • Designs and develops end to end learning solutions in alignment with identified needs and including the preparation of all learning materials such as participant and facilitator workbooks, presentations, reference guides, job aids etc.
  • Liaise with us and with client (when an external client project) throughout the design and development process for content validation.
  • Occasionally Facilitate/Lead Train-the-Trainer sessions for various client programs.
  • Assist with reviewing and evaluating effectiveness of learning service providers, vendors and consultants providing insights and recommendations as appropriate.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
